Observant neighbors have noticed more people in town, more people in the state, more people in the entire Earth. When they also noticed that the Earth was not growing larger, they asked: Will there be enough? Enough Earth left for my grand children? Scientific pundits answered with a new formula, sustainability.
Others have noticed that they are richer than some of their neighbors, neighbors living in other parts of town and particularly those neighbors living in the developing world. How much of the limited Earth resources do those others need to take in order to have a good life. Scientific pundits answered with the formula word, sustainability.
Sustainability sounds simple. Humans will become sustainable WHEN humans limit their numbers, and at the same time, WHEN humans limit their taking from the Earth's resources. Skeptics have asked, Who will limit their numbers and who will limit their consumption?
We know that humans learn new ways of living by observing others. They may know modest ways of taking resources from the environment and new efficiencies using them. We ask: Isnt someone living sustainably? That is, arent there some people or isn't there some society living well with both small consumption and small families at the same time? We looked around and there was Kerala. How do they do it?
